HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSITY
The University of the
Algarve, as it exists right now, resulted from the merger of two previously
existing institutions: the University of the Algarve, created on March 28, 1979
and Faro Polytechnic Institute, established in December 26, 1979. The University
of Algarve is thus an institution different from other universities, given
coexist within it Organic Units of University Education and Polytechnic.
With over 30 years as
community service, the University of Algarve (UAlg), composed of four campuses,
three in the city of Faro and Portimão, has consolidated its development, both
in structural and administrative, in terms academic and pedagogical, currently
with wide spaces, infrastructure and equipment that provide excellent
conditions for study, work, research and socializing.
The UAlg offers its
students courses in six subject areas: Arts, Literature and History, Science
and Health Technologies, Basic Sciences and Engineering, Social Sciences,
Education and Training, Life Sciences, Earth, Sea and Environment, and
Economics, Management and Tourism. Formations in these areas include the
degrees of bachelor, master and doctor.

Established just over
30 years, the University of the Algarve has established itself as a higher education
institution of reference in southern Portugal. Integrating university colleges
and polytechnics, the University of the Algarve has multiplied in recent years
their training offerings, its scientific research capacity and its potential to
transfer knowledge.
In recent years, by
virtue of internationalization, there has been an increase of foreign students
from more than 60 countries. The quality and diversity of European Masters and
Doctorates, together with postgraduate open to students from all over the
world, justify the extent of this movement.
Also point out the role
that the University of Algarve has played in the creation of small companies
formed by researchers and doctoral students, valuing the market the results of
their respective research programs.
In these last three
decades, the University of Algarve has consolidated the link established with
the regional business and with public and private organizations, fostering
knowledge transfer and contributing to a sustainable development with an impact
on the entire community.
