HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSITY
The first steps on the
way to what is now the University of Beira Interior (UBI) were taken in the
70s, when he was born the Polytechnic Institute of Covilhã (IPC) in 1973. The
city, once considered the "Portuguese Manchester", by long tradition,
dynamism and quality of their wool, was reached in this decade, a crisis at the
industry level. Thus, following the publication of Decree-Law 402/73 of 11
August, as part of the "Reform Veiga Simão," which led to the
expansion and diversification of higher education, created the IPC, which
received in 1975 , its first 143 students in the courses of Textile Engineering
and Business Administration and Accounting. In July 1979, the past six years,
the institution becomes Institute University of Beira Interior (iubi) (Law
44/79 of 11 September). The conversion iubi came to pass in 1986 (Decree-Law
76-B/86, April 30). The first rector was Prof. UBI. Dr. Cândido Manuel Passos
Morgado, who would remain in office between August 21 1980 and January 19,
1996, on which date he assumes his duties as Rector Prof. Doctor José Manuel
dos Santos Silva, who remains in office until June 19, 2009. This date takes
over as the third Rector of the institution Prof.. João António Rodrigues Sampaio Queiroz.

mountain town near the Serra da Estrela, the highest mountain in the Portuguese
mainland. UBI was awarded the Diploma Supplement European Commission.
